Mon, September 19, 2005 - 10:43 AMI believe so. They heat you up and your metabolism gets a little jump that way. -

Tue, January 10, 2006 - 10:06 AMno.
if you want to burn more calories, then you need to increase the amount of oxygen to your body cells-
which means that you need to do aerobic exercise, or some kind of yoga with deep or rhythmic breathing.
as far a spicy foods-they are very healthy and are great for any kind of diet....I love hot chilies and hot peppers!
but they heat you up very quickly, you also cool very quickly. whatever quick little jump you get, you slow down just as quickly.

Re: is there any truth to...
Fri, January 13, 2006 - 12:12 PMI've heard that they do. Something about the effect capsaicin has on the metabolism. They also help you to feel fuller sooner and therefore eat less. -

Re: is there any truth to...
Fri, January 13, 2006 - 1:32 PMCapsaicin does that? Or since its spicy ... one tends to drink more water/fluids with the dish and thus fill up faster??

Re: is there any truth to...
Fri, January 13, 2006 - 8:56 PMcapsicum actually stimulates appetite...not the other way around.
spicey foods DO NOT speed up the metabolism...they make your heart rate speed up very quickly if you are not used to eating spicey, but then immediately your body cools.
capsicum does not make you burn calories. The spicey effect does not last long enough to give you the same effect as caffein or other adrenal stimulators...
its late!-bed time... -

Mon, January 16, 2006 - 1:16 AMNo expert here, but these are some of the things I have been reading - what are your sources? You seem very sure of your convictions.

Re: is there any truth to...
Mon, January 16, 2006 - 10:16 AMI gonna plead the fifth on the first two sources-they were put out by supplement companies...and the second one is specifically on capsicum as a supplement, not as a food component.
the third one talks about dietary red pepper as a carbohydrate oxidizing enhancer...fromthat perspective, red pepper CAN temporarily boost the "metabolism", or at least give the appearance of such, but it does not talk about how the "metabolism" slows down DRAMATICALLY about 30 minutes after consumption.
EAT spicey foods. they taste good and are good for you.[for other easons other than the "speeds up metabolism and then you lose weight" falacy]
if you want to lose weight, eat whole unprocessed grains, fresh roots and greenleafy vegetables, beans, herbs, spices, and lean high quality animal protien if you want.
I am a practicing Holistic nutritionist and I have worked with well over 100 people in the past 2 years or so. and all of my clients have lost weight and improved health in the same way I have just mentioned.
there is no single cure all for weight loss. it takes work and commitment. spicey food is not the answer...its only one smaill part of it... -

Re: is there any truth to...
Mon, January 16, 2006 - 10:59 PMthe theory I've heard is that spicy foods/capsaicin/cayenne are thermogenic.
The jury is out on the effectiveness of these foods as thermogenic. -

Re: is there any truth to...
Tue, January 17, 2006 - 10:34 PMgood point.
look, they are very healthy foods, but you must understand that thye are not simply "metabolism" boosters...
spices, like cumin, turmeric, and coriander, are actually better for the metabolizing of calories than the spicey peppers like red and green bell peppers. the reason is that they support the liver in its process of breaking down nutients, as well as normalize the overall climate of the body. they are also digestive aids and they reduce over all inflammation, which in and of itself is good for weight loss.
